BLUE BADGE SCHEME

BLUE BADGE SCHEME

If your child has mobility issues you might be entitled to a Blue Badge, the nationally recognised badge for parking in a disabled bay, or for free/discounted parking on meters.

Your child might qualify for a Blue Badge if:

  • they are two years or older with a permanent or substantial disability which means they are unable to walk or have very considerable difficulty walking.
  • they receive the higher rate of the mobility component of the Disability Living Allowance.
  • they must always be accompanied by bulky medical equipment which is difficult to carry
  • they need to kept near a vehicle at all times to get emergency treatment for a condition when necessary.

To apply for a Blue Badge for your child click here (https://www.gov.uk/apply-blue-badge)

TIPS:

  • Make sure your badge is displayed issuing authority side up. Traffic wardens have no qualms about slapping tickets for wrongly displayed Blue Badges.
  • If you’re not using the badge, stick it in the glove box. In hard-to-park areas they are irresistible to thieves.
  • Tempting as it might be, don’t use the badge when your child is not in the car. It’s illegal and you could lose the badge.
  • Some high-density areas like the City of London have their own rules for Blue Badge users. Check before you travel.
  • You can use the Blue Badge in parts of the EU. Check the links below before you travel.
